Make The Most Out Of Your Conservatory All Year Round

A conservatory can transform your home’s living space creating an extra room that can be used all year round. Some potential buyers are sometimes put off, they seem to think a conservatory can only be used during the spring and summer months. This is partially true, however they can also be a fantastic place to relax in the autumn and winter. Conservatories are not just for the summer, technology is advancing so they can be light and airy living spaces during the colder months too.

In the past, most conservatories were too hot to use in the summer and too cold to use in the winter. Condensation was also a bit of a problem especially in the winter while some conservatories were simply too bright to even watch TV during the hotter months. Many were built as temporary structures as cheaper alternatives to extensions. This meant that they didn’t comply with the necessary building regulations in terms of energy use and thermal loss.

Subtle changes

Subtle changes to a conservatory can make them very desirable. They are perfect for entertaining, relaxing in or for a bit of “me” time throughout the year. Here are four things to consider to make your conservatory even better:-

  • Fixed roof replacement – you can replace a glass or polycarbonate conservatory roof with a new solid roof structure. This will keep the cold and damp out. Do check whether you need planning permission when altering the exterior of a conservatory.
  • Underfloor heating and radiators – adding these to your conservatory will make it usable all year round. Relax and unwind even during the colder months in a warm, comfortable living area.
  • Roof and window blinds – blinds will help to reduce the glare of the sun so you can read a favourite book, watch TV or chat with friends online in the conservatory overlooking your garden.
  • Insulated ceiling – did you know you can have a conservatory roof insulated? It doesn’t require planning permission and will make it feel like a real room with a better all year round temperature.

So many extra options to choose from

Traditionally, conservatories have only been warm weather rooms. Today things are different. Double glazing for instance can help to keep heat in a conservatory while also reducing draughts and outside noise. Double or triple glazing also allows you to harness the sun’s heat even throughout autumn and winter making the conservatory usable whatever the weather outside.

Along with double or triple glazing, why not add a touch of quality and style with comfortable furniture? How about a wicker sofa, matching chairs and a warm rug? Create a classy, cosy little snug to chill out or watch the birds build nests and gather food.

Make full use of your conservatory as a dining room, to hold dinner parties or for social occasions where friends and family can gather. Some people even use their conservatory as an exercise room out of the public eye with their very own home gym.

There really are so many ways you can make better use of a conservatory whether in the spring, summer, autumn or winter.
